Where We Live and Work

            After a three-month visit to New York, Albert Camus said of the city, “I still know nothing about New York, whether one moves among madmen here or among the most reasonable people in the world.”

            Ana Banana is designed in New York City; the city of 8.5 million, of the five distinct boroughs, of which so much has been said. It’s the Big Apple. It’s the Concrete Jungle. It’s the city we love. It’s hard not to be corny about it, because to try to pin point the exact thing that makes New York special is impossible.

            Anyone who lives in New York knows that at a certain point the city kidnaps a bit of our soul and keeps it locked away somewhere (possibly in North Brother Island). We keep it alive by paying ransom bit by bit in rent and time spent waiting for the train.

            But, little by little, in a beautiful and somewhat perverse way, this gives us a sense of belonging; an illusion that the city belongs to us, as much as we belong to the city. Some kind of comfort in the fact that the city’s hustle and bustle affirms our existences as a matter of fact (and that, if one ever has the illusion of knowing everything there is to know about Manhattan, there is always the Bronx to visit for the first time). 

            We are neither mad nor reasonable. We are simply in love with where we live and work. Of course, that doesn’t mean one shouldn’t immerse oneself in Camus’s words this April.
